Are Kia's reliable cars?

I'm looking for an inexpensive, safe, reliable car. So far, the Kia Forte has seemed like my best bet. However, my dad (who is buying me a car as a Christmas/birthday present) has a serious problem with Kia's for whatever reason. I know that they used to be pretty unreliable, but that their quality has greatly improved. Is this true? Why are they so inexpensive? Thanks!
